German fashion designer Jil Sander launched her eponymous brand in 1968. In addition to influencing the minimalist fashion movement, she is renowned for her refined and understated designs. Originally a fashion editor for a magazine, she honed her skills in alterations, which later informed her design approach. She founded her own fashion brand in 1968 and debuted her first collection in 1973. Her designs were inspired by the streamlined, simplified, and clear contours of the Bauhaus style. Especially in the 1980s, she became a refreshing alternative to the extravagant fashion trends of the time. In the 1990s, she was considered alongside Helmut Lang and Calvin Klein as one of the masters of minimalism.
