BODE opens its first concept store in Asia, Tokyo.

BODE<\/span>the Tokyo concept store is located on the ground floor of a quiet, retro-style apartment building in the Yoyogi-Uehara neighborhood. Continuing the brand's consistent retail philosophy, it is cleverly integrated into the residential community, creating a \"neighborhood store\" that coexists with the community, existing in the daily spaces where people live, work, and relax.<\/span><\/p>

Some of our first wholesale partners, nearly ten years ago, were Japanese\u2014buyers who have continued to \nsupport and contribute to the growth of the brand. It seemed natural, based on that history of partnership, to \nchoose Tokyo for our first retail location in Asia.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Green River Project LLC designed BODE Tokyo with reference to the work of Czech-American architect An\ntonin Raymond, who built some of the most striking institutional buildings in Tokyo. Awarded the Order of the \nRising Sun by Emperor Hirohito in 1964, Raymond worked on the American School in Japan (1927), the Italian \nEmbassy Villa in Nikko (1929), the Reader\u2019s Digest offices in Tokyo (1951), and was part of the team for the U.S. \nState Department\u2019s embassy complex. His approach honored Japanese building practices while also drawing \non Western historical techniques.<\/p>

For furniture, objects, and decoration, GRPLLC referred to the Kennedy Restoration (1961-63) and the works \nJackie Kennedy selected to hang in the Oval Office after consultation with Sister Parish, Stephane Boudin, and \nWinterthur\u2019s Henry du Pont. Throughout her restoration, Jackie was committed to the notion of \u201cre-establishing \nhistory\u201d within a historic space, maintaining the traces of presidents gone before.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Adopting Jackie\u2019s approach, GRPLLC selected works that would translate the history of the brand for this \nnew market, contextualizing the pieces in an institutional space. Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a painting \nwhich hung in JFK\u2019s Oval Office, reproduced by artist Matt Kenny. The dressing room features an Egyptian \nlandscape painting by Kurt Beers, flanked by two Iranian brass vases filled with dried hydrangeas from Emily\u2019s \nConnecticut garden. The floor is covered with custom wool carpeting, developed by GRPLLC to invoke office \nlobbies and embassy common areas, and the dressing rooms close with reclaimed wood doors with green \nglass windows, sourced in Hiyama, Kanagawa.<\/p>

At the center of the space stands an American black walnut dining table with matching chairs by GRPLLC, \nupon which sits a 1920s French ceramic vase by Edmond Lachenal. There is a desk with an Arts and Crafts\nera bronze envelope holder and inkwell, from Paula Rubenstein in New York City, and a desk lamp from Emily\u2019s \nhome. Towards the store checkout, in what looks like an addition to the space, is a room made entirely from \nreclaimed cypress wood. The house was built entirely by hand using historical hand-techniques and features \ntwo GRPLLC benches with chiseled details.<\/p>

BODE Tokyo will stock full BODE menswear and womenswear collections along with one-of-a-kind pieces \nmade from vintage and antique textiles. Among the store\u2019s exclusive offerings are bras and pillows sewn from \nmidcentury National Parks souvenir pillowcases, appliqu\u00e9d tees, and keepsake pieces made for BODE Tokyo.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
