The Splendor and Romance of Indonesia

BIYAN was founded by the talented Indonesian designer Biyan Wanaatmadja. After studying craftsmanship at the London College of Fashion, Biyan worked as an apprentice at Enrico Coveri in Florence, where he gained valuable practical experience in tailoring and detailing over approximately a year. Upon returning to Indonesia, Biyan established his own studio in Surabaya, focusing on design and sales. His debut women’s collection in 1984 sparked considerable discussion in Indonesia’s fashion scene. After nearly a decade of development, he officially launched a complete collection in 1992 and opened his first store in a major mall in the capital city of Jakarta.


Today, BIYAN has grown into a more mature and diverse brand, encompassing various lines including STUDIO 133 BIYAN, which focuses on a more refined aesthetic; (X)S.M.L, targeting the younger market; BIYAN Bride; and BIYAN LIVING, which specializes in home decor. It stands as one of the most recognized Indonesian fashion brands in the international fashion scene.


The rich historical and cultural heritage of Indonesia serves as a profound source of inspiration for BIYAN. The designer skillfully incorporates intricate tailoring techniques and vibrant traditional crafts—such as batik, weaving, and embroidery—into their fashion designs. Additionally, the use of complex handcrafted beadwork and original silk prints collectively contributes to BIYAN’s ethereal, romantic, and yet timeless brand aesthetic.


In 2012, BIYAN made its debut at Paris Fashion Week, showcasing the design prowess from the Far East. This milestone not only highlighted the brand’s exceptional talent but also led to successful collaborations with top-tier department stores and retailers such as Bergdorf Goodman, Joyce Boutique, and Club 21. Indonesian fashion media have rightly hailed Biyan Wanaatmadja as the “Design Star of Indonesia,” acknowledging his well-deserved recognition.
