BODE opens its first concept store in Asia, Tokyo.
Reconstructing spatial aesthetics rooted in historical context
BODEthe Tokyo concept store is located on the ground floor of a quiet, retro-style apartment building in the Yoyogi-Uehara neighborhood. Continuing the brand's consistent retail philosophy, it is cleverly integrated into the residential community, creating a "neighborhood store" that coexists with the community, existing in the daily spaces where people live, work, and relax.
Some of our first wholesale partners, nearly ten years ago, were Japanese—buyers who have continued to support and contribute to the growth of the brand. It seemed natural, based on that history of partnership, to choose Tokyo for our first retail location in Asia.
Green River Project LLC designed BODE Tokyo with reference to the work of Czech-American architect An tonin Raymond, who built some of the most striking institutional buildings in Tokyo. Awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by Emperor Hirohito in 1964, Raymond worked on the American School in Japan (1927), the Italian Embassy Villa in Nikko (1929), the Reader’s Digest offices in Tokyo (1951), and was part of the team for the U.S. State Department’s embassy complex. His approach honored Japanese building practices while also drawing on Western historical techniques.
For furniture, objects, and decoration, GRPLLC referred to the Kennedy Restoration (1961-63) and the works Jackie Kennedy selected to hang in the Oval Office after consultation with Sister Parish, Stephane Boudin, and Winterthur’s Henry du Pont. Throughout her restoration, Jackie was committed to the notion of “re-establishing history” within a historic space, maintaining the traces of presidents gone before.
Adopting Jackie’s approach, GRPLLC selected works that would translate the history of the brand for this new market, contextualizing the pieces in an institutional space. Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a painting which hung in JFK’s Oval Office, reproduced by artist Matt Kenny. The dressing room features an Egyptian landscape painting by Kurt Beers, flanked by two Iranian brass vases filled with dried hydrangeas from Emily’s Connecticut garden. The floor is covered with custom wool carpeting, developed by GRPLLC to invoke office lobbies and embassy common areas, and the dressing rooms close with reclaimed wood doors with green glass windows, sourced in Hiyama, Kanagawa.
At the center of the space stands an American black walnut dining table with matching chairs by GRPLLC, upon which sits a 1920s French ceramic vase by Edmond Lachenal. There is a desk with an Arts and Crafts era bronze envelope holder and inkwell, from Paula Rubenstein in New York City, and a desk lamp from Emily’s home. Towards the store checkout, in what looks like an addition to the space, is a room made entirely from reclaimed cypress wood. The house was built entirely by hand using historical hand-techniques and features two GRPLLC benches with chiseled details.
BODE Tokyo will stock full BODE menswear and womenswear collections along with one-of-a-kind pieces made from vintage and antique textiles. Among the store’s exclusive offerings are bras and pillows sewn from midcentury National Parks souvenir pillowcases, appliquéd tees, and keepsake pieces made for BODE Tokyo.
The new store honors the longtime relationship between the brand and our enduring supporters in Japan, bringing BODE’s historical American luxury to a new continent.
