JW Anderson Pop-Up Installation Art Exhibition
JW Anderson’s Spring/Summer 2020 installation art exhibition makes its Asian debut.
Exploring the truths of the world both inside and outside of art.
onefifteen has partnered with JW Anderson to bring the brand’s Spring/Summer 2020 runway concept to Taiwan, presenting the first JW Anderson SS20 installation art exhibition in Asia, featuring Canadian artist Liz Magor's transparent acrylic box installation "Blowout," the exhibit echoes the new collection's creative inspiration and reimagines the art visual of the SS20 runway. Titled "Gaze," the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on their “experiences of seeing” in everyday life, challenging preconceived notions and exploring the dialogue between art and fashion regarding truth. The JW Anderson SS20 Installation Art Exhibition is on display at the onefifteen Daan flagship store from now until March 23.
JW Anderson was founded in 2007 by Northern Irish designer Jonathan Anderson. After graduating from the London College of Fashion, Anderson quickly showcased his extraordinary talent in the fashion industry. In 2012, he received the British Fashion Award for "Emerging Talent in Womenswear," and the following year, he won the award for "British Designer of the Year," propelling him from an independent newcomer to a focal point in the fashion world. Subsequently, not only did Donatella Versace invite him to design both men’s and women’s collections and accessories for the Versace diffusion line Versus, but in 2013, the LVMH group also announced an investment in the JW Anderson brand and appointed Anderson as the Creative Director of the historic brand LOEWE.
Jonathan Anderson has shared in interviews that his design philosophy is not about pleasing the industry, but rather about challenging it. Under his leadership, JW Anderson’s designs are continually innovative, breaking existing perceptions and boundaries with a spirit of experimentation. Proportions, silhouettes, and colors in his designs become vibrant and engaging under his creative direction. When androgynous fashion was not yet widely accepted, he pushed the brand toward a “gender-blurring” aesthetic.
In today’s digital age, where celebrity endorsements and influencer marketing are mainstream strategies for most brands, Jonathan Anderson prefers to collaborate with artists, drawing inspiration from their works. This preference highlights his ambition to challenge the fashion industry. Rather than focusing solely on commercial considerations and fashion trends, JW Anderson's design DNA reveals a poetic sense of beauty.
Johnathan Anderson, deeply passionate about art and a keen collector, brings his unique perspective and aesthetic talent to his designs, incorporating elements from ceramics, paintings, and architecture into his collections seamlessly and thoughtfully. "We live in an era where art and fashion inspire each other," Johnathan remarked. For the Spring/Summer 2020 collection, he drew inspiration from Canadian artist Liz Magor's work "Blowout." On the runway, models moved amidst Liz Magor's art pieces, which were scattered within transparent acrylic boxes on the floor. These boxes contained various everyday objects and items that are often overlooked, such as dolls, worn clothing, and long-forgotten dried flowers.
Liz Magor, known for using sculpture to reflect on life's truths, daily habits, and societal phenomena, uses a soft voice to address tough issues. In "Blowout," Magor redefines and reshapes items that are overused and worn but are omnipresent, bringing them back into the viewer's focus.
As artist Liz Magor aims to convey, Johnathan Anderson's Spring/Summer 2020 collection is deeply influenced by the concept of "gazing," using intricate details to challenge conventional perceptions of individual pieces. "When I saw Liz Magor's work, I was struck by her perspective on the 'experience of viewing' objects. It made me reflect on how we perceive a piece of fabric or jewelry and what significance it holds for us. Since then, I've found that objects in old magazines seem even more dramatic than when I first saw them," Johnathan shared during an interview backstage at the show.
This season, JW Anderson reexamines and redefines the visual concepts of its pieces. An example is the striking outerwear crystal bra decoration, which directly highlights the beauty of the female form. By using lingerie as outerwear, the collection encourages a reevaluation of societal views on the female body.
The Spring/Summer 2020 collection takes a more feminine turn compared to previous seasons, featuring spring-inspired prints, pastel pink fabrics, and intricate crystal details. The designs utilize draping, pleats, and asymmetry to evoke an effortlessly elegant, goddess-like femininity. This season also incorporates elements like weaving, tassels, and hemp rope, combined with flowing fabrics and layered cuts, creating a desert-inspired visual effect.
In addition to the imaginative and exceptional designs of the clothing, accessories remain a standout highlight for Johnathan Anderson. The brand continually innovates beyond classic designs, from the iconic anchor logo bag and chain bags to the popular baseball cap bag from the previous season. This season introduces new accessories featuring key elements from the collection: woven and tassel details, including summer-inspired bamboo bags and scarf strap logo bags.
